Xiamen University (XMU) was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee (Chen Jiageng), a celebrated overseas Chinese philanthropist and nationalist from Singapore who donated his wealth to build what he called his contribution to empowering the Chinese nation through education. XMU was the first university in modern Chinese history to be founded by an overseas Chinese - a founding legacy deeply embedded in XMU's culture and uniquely honoured by the Tan Kah Kee Scholarship. Former US President Richard Nixon called Xiamen an 'Oriental Hawaii', and XMU itself is widely described as China's most beautiful university, set between green hills and the South China Sea.
XMU holds Project 985 and Double First-Class status and is MOE directly administered - placing it in the same national key university tier as the most elite Chinese institutions. With 40,000+ students, 2,700+ full-time teachers and researchers (including 22 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), 82 undergraduate programs, 276 graduate programs, and 187 PhD programs, XMU is a full comprehensive research university with particular strength in oncology, cardiology, and infectious diseases through its Medical College.
The MBBS program operates from the purpose-built Xiang'an Medical Campus, with 8 affiliated hospitals all rated Grade-3 Class-A - the highest tier in China's hospital system. Within this network: the First Affiliated Hospital is ranked among China's top 100; Zhongshan Hospital is JCI accredited, A++ nationally, with 2,500 beds and #1 in Xiamen for Nature Index research output; and the Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital is a National Regional Medical Center - the only cardiovascular-specialty National Regional Medical Center in Fujian Province.
