About the Chinese Government Scholarship
The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), administered by the China Scholarship Council under China's Ministry of Education, is one of the largest and most generous government scholarship programs in the world. Established to promote educational exchange and international cooperation, it funds tens of thousands of international students every year from over 180 countries to pursue undergraduate, Master's, and PhD degrees at more than 300 designated Chinese universities. It is widely regarded as one of the most accessible fully funded opportunities in Asian higher education.
The scholarship covers every major cost of studying in China: full tuition fees, free on-campus accommodation or a monthly housing allowance, comprehensive medical insurance for the entire program duration, and a monthly living stipend ranging from ยฅ2,500 (approximately USD 350) for Bachelor's students to ยฅ3,500 (approximately USD 490) for doctoral students. These amounts are sufficient for a comfortable student life in Chinese university cities, where food, transport, and daily expenses are affordable by international standards.
There are two distinct application routes. Type A is the bilateral government track - coordinated through the applicant's home country government or embassy and China's Ministry of Education. It typically includes round-trip airfare as an additional benefit and involves nomination by the home country's education authority. Type B is the direct university route, in which students apply independently to CSC-authorized Chinese universities, choosing up to three institutions without requiring government nomination. Type B is generally more flexible and accessible, with deadlines spread across December to March, while Type A follows the home country's own annual timeline.
For students pursuing medicine, CSC is particularly significant. The scholarship funds MBBS (General Medicine) programs at dozens of MOE-listed Chinese universities including China Medical University, Wuhan University, Nanjing Medical University, Jilin University, and Harbin Medical University. These six-year programs are fully taught in English and lead to degrees recognized by the World Health Organization. Students must verify that their chosen university is on the official Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) list - a non-MOE degree cannot be used for medical licensing in most countries.
Starting from the 2026-2027 academic year, all undergraduate-level applicants to Chinese universities - including CSC scholarship applicants at the Bachelor's level - are required to pass the CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) before applying. The CSCA is a standardized test held five times per year (January, March, April, June, and December) and is available globally. Mathematics is compulsory for all applicants. Students applying for fully English-taught programs such as English-medium MBBS are automatically exempt from the Chinese language component. CSCA scores are valid for two years. Master's and PhD applicants are entirely exempt from this requirement.
All CSC programs begin in September. Students should begin preparing documents, writing their study plan, and for Type B applicants, contacting potential university supervisors, no later than August of the preceding year. A well-structured, university-specific study plan is consistently the most cited differentiating factor between accepted and rejected applications among candidates with comparable academic records.

Insider Tips & Pro Tips
Bachelor's applicants must pass the CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) before applying - register at www.csca.cn. The exam is held five times yearly (January, March, April, June, December) and scores are valid two years. Mathematics is compulsory; the Chinese language component is waived for fully English-taught programs. Master's and PhD applicants are completely exempt.
For Type B, reach out to professors at your chosen university before submitting your application. A supervisor willing to support your application - even an informal email of encouragement - significantly improves your admission chances, especially for Master's and PhD research programs.
Your study plan is the single most differentiating document in your application. Generic study plans are immediately visible to reviewers. Write specifically: name the research group, reference the university's published work, and explain why this institution uniquely suits your academic goals.
Verify the Agency Number on the CSC portal carefully before submitting - entering the wrong agency number routes your application to the wrong institution and is one of the most common and uncorrectable mistakes.
Ensure all scanned documents are high-resolution and clearly legible - phone photos of certificates taken in poor lighting are frequently cited as rejection reasons. Use a scanner or a well-lit flat-surface photo.
For MBBS applicants, confirm your chosen university holds current PMDC/PMC recognition before applying. MOE-listed universities are strongly preferred for government scholarships and broader international recognition. Check the MOE list at laihua.moe.edu.cn.
Apply as early as possible for Type A through your home country's education authority. Internal nomination deadlines often fall weeks before the published portal deadline - contact your government's education ministry or embassy early to understand their specific timeline.

Type A is the HEC/Embassy route managed through HEC Pakistan. It requires the HAT/USAT test, includes round-trip airfare, and allows up to 2 university choices. Type B is the direct university route - no HAT test required, no airfare included, and you can apply to up to 3 universities directly through the CSC portal.
No IELTS is required if your previous degree was taught in English. You only need to provide an English Proficiency Certificate from your previous institution. IELTS or TOEFL is required only if your previous education was not in English.
Applicants with strong academic records (70%+ in the previous degree), a well-written study plan, and for Type B, an acceptance or recommendation letter from a Chinese professor have the highest success rates. Applying early and to less competitive universities in the Type B route also significantly improves selection odds.
Yes. MBBS (General Medicine) is available at many MOE-listed Chinese universities under the CSC scholarship. Most MBBS programs are 6 years and taught in English. All universities we recommend hold confirmed PMDC/PMC recognition.
Begin preparing in August - gathering documents, writing your study plan, and for Type B, contacting professors. Type A HEC portal opens in October and closes around December/January. Type B universities have varying deadlines mostly between December and March.
The CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) is a new standardized entrance test that became mandatory from the 2026/2027 academic year for all international students applying to Bachelor's (undergraduate) programs at Chinese universities. If you are applying for the CSC scholarship at the Bachelor's level, you must register for and pass the CSCA before submitting your application - register at www.csca.cn. Mathematics is compulsory for all applicants. Science Chinese is required for Chinese-taught programs but is automatically waived for fully English-taught programs such as MBBS in English. The exam is held 5 times per year (January, March, April, June, and December) and scores are valid for 2 years. Master's and PhD CSC applicants do NOT need the CSCA.
