About the Open Doors Scholarship
Open Doors is Russia's flagship international scholarship competition, managed by the Association of Global Universities - a consortium of Russia's leading research universities. Each year, the program offers over 6,300 fully funded places at major Russian universities to international students from around the world. The entire selection process is conducted online: from initial registration through all evaluation stages, with no embassy visits, no in-person document submissions, and no application fees of any kind.
Open Doors distinguishes itself from most government scholarship programs by using a multi-component evaluation system rather than selecting purely on academic grades. Candidates are assessed on three components: a First Stage Subject Test (a 45-mark discipline-specific test conducted online with 3 attempts allowed, counting the best score), a Second Stage Exam (a more rigorous written assessment for top performers), and a Portfolio of extracurricular and professional achievements. The portfolio component allows candidates with research papers, Olympiad certificates, sports achievements, published work, and professional certifications to differentiate themselves from candidates who rely on grades alone.
The scholarship covers full tuition fees at the assigned Russian university, free on-campus accommodation, and a monthly living stipend - the amount varies by university and degree level. Programs are available in both English and Russian, with preparatory Russian language courses provided for students choosing Russian-medium programs. The scholarships are distributed across Russia's leading institutions: Moscow State University, RUDN University, Novosibirsk State University, Higher School of Economics (HSE), ITMO University, Ural Federal University, and many others.
The program spans Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD levels across virtually all academic disciplines. Clinical Medicine and Public Health (the category covering Medicine, Dentistry, and allied health fields) is the most competitive category - approximately 140 global winners were selected in this category in the most recent cycle. STEM, engineering, social sciences, economics, and computer science categories are less saturated and offer stronger acceptance probabilities for well-prepared candidates.
An essential and non-negotiable rule for Open Doors is the motivation letter authenticity requirement. Candidates must answer four specific questions about their personal goals, academic achievements, reasons for choosing their subject, and reasons for wanting to study in Russia. The letter must be written entirely in the applicant's own voice. The Open Doors system uses AI content detection tools, and any letter identified as AI-generated leads to immediate and automatic disqualification with no appeal. Candidates should draft, review, and revise their letter multiple times before submission.

Insider Tips & Pro Tips
Do NOT use AI to write your motivation letter. The organizers explicitly check for AI-generated content and automatic disqualification is the consequence. Write from your heart, be specific, be honest
Select only 2-3 programs, not 5. Selecting 5 programs creates scheduling conflicts in the First Stage Tests, which can hurt your performance across all of them
Take all 3 attempts on the First Stage Test - your best score is counted. Review your answers between attempts
Build your portfolio before the November 16 deadline. Extracurricular evidence - research papers, Olympiad results, competition certificates, sports achievements, internships - all contribute to the portfolio score
For Medicine (Clinical Medicine / Public Health), the competition is very intense - only ~140 global winners last year. Aim for the highest possible score in all three components
Check each university's specific requirements - some Open Doors-eligible universities may require additional documents or an interview beyond the standard two-stage assessment

Absolutely not. Using AI tools like ChatGPT to write the motivation letter leads to automatic disqualification. The organizers use detection tools. Write your letter yourself, honestly, in your own voice.
Very competitive. The Clinical Medicine and Public Health category (which includes Medicine, Dentistry, and related fields) had approximately 140 global winners last year. You need very high scores on all three assessment components - First Stage Test, Second Stage Exam, and Portfolio - to have a chance.
It is subject-specific and includes some questions with figures, graphs, and diagrams. You have 3 attempts and your best score is counted - this means strategic preparation and multiple attempts are important. Review your answers carefully before retaking.
Your Open Doors portfolio is evaluated alongside your test scores. Strong portfolio items include: published research papers or conference papers, Olympiad certificates or academic competition awards (national or international), sports achievements (national or university level), certifications in your field (professional courses, technical certifications), teaching or tutoring experience, volunteer and community service records, internship certificates, and any patents or inventions. Not all of these are required - any combination of genuine achievements strengthens your portfolio. Upload the clearest evidence you have.
Open Doors partners include Russia's leading research universities - Moscow State University (MGU), RUDN (Peoples' Friendship University), Novosibirsk State University, Ural Federal University, HSE (Higher School of Economics), ITMO University, and many others. The full list of participating universities is available on the Open Doors portal (od.globaluni.ru) and changes slightly each year. Check the current list when selecting your programs.
