About the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship 2026
The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program is Hungary's flagship initiative for attracting international students to Hungarian higher education. Managed by the Tempus Public Foundation under the auspices of the Hungarian Government, the program operates through bilateral agreements with partner countries worldwide - each country receives an annual quota of seats distributed through its designated higher education authority. The scholarship funds studies at Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, and One-Tier Master (OTM) levels across Hungary's universities and colleges.
The financial package is one of the strongest in European scholarship programs. Students receive full tuition fee exemption for the complete degree duration, a monthly stipend (HUF 43,700 for Bachelor's, Master's, and OTM students; HUF 140,000-180,000 for PhD students), free dormitory accommodation or a housing allowance, and comprehensive medical insurance. As Hungary is a member of the Schengen Area, students also gain the ability to travel visa-free across 27 European countries throughout their scholarship. Part-time work is permitted under Hungarian law.
The program is particularly valued for its health sciences programs. The One-Tier Master (OTM) programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, and Pharmacy are 6-year programs equivalent to MBBS, BDS, or PharmD degrees. Hungary's medical universities - particularly Semmelweis University in Budapest, the University of Debrecen, the University of Pรฉcs, and the University of Szeged - have been training international medical students in English for over five decades. Their degrees are recognized across the European Union and accepted for licensing examination in dozens of countries globally.
Applications are submitted through the Stipendium Hungaricum online portal (stipendiumhungaricum.hu). After the application deadline, each country's designated education authority nominates candidates from their national applicant pool. These nominees are then forwarded to their chosen Hungarian universities, which conduct their own entrance evaluations - typically an online exam for Medicine and Dentistry testing biology and chemistry knowledge, or an academic interview for other fields. Final scholarship awards are confirmed after this university-level stage.
Students should use the 'Find Program' tool on the Stipendium Hungaricum portal carefully when planning their application. Not all fields are available every year, and program offerings vary by institution and intake. Applications must be submitted before January 15 at 2 PM Central European Time - this deadline is strictly enforced and is not extended for any reason.

What the Scholarship Covers
Studying in Hungary
Hungary is a Central European EU member state with a centuries-long tradition of academic excellence. Budapest, the capital, is consistently ranked among Europe's most beautiful and livable cities for students - rich in architecture, cultural life, cafes, and nightlife. The country's four major medical universities (Semmelweis Budapest, Debrecen, Pรฉcs, and Szeged) are internationally renowned, with decades of experience training international students in English. Living costs in Hungary are among the most affordable in the EU - monthly expenses for a student in Budapest typically range from EUR 400-600, well within reach on the Stipendium Hungaricum stipend. Hungary's central Schengen location means Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, and Krakow are all within a few hours by train.

Insider Tips & Pro Tips
Submit at least 48 hours before the January 15, 2 PM CET deadline. The portal frequently experiences high traffic near closing and technical issues have caused last-minute applications to fail. Do not risk this.
Use the 'Find Program' tool on the Stipendium Hungaricum portal to check program availability for the current year - not all fields open every year, and program offerings change between cycles.
For Medicine and Dentistry OTM programs, the seats are highly limited and the competition is intense. Your academic record needs to be strong (top grades in Biology and Chemistry) and you must also prepare for the university entrance exam after nomination.
After nomination, prepare specifically for your chosen Hungarian university's entrance assessment. Semmelweis University, University of Debrecen, and University of Pรฉcs all conduct biology and chemistry entrance evaluations for Medicine applicants.
Contact the Stipendium Hungaricum team at your country's designated education authority to understand your national quota, nomination criteria, and any country-specific requirements - these vary between partner countries.
The airfare reimbursement is paid after arrival in Hungary - ensure you have sufficient funds for the initial flight booking. The reimbursement timeline and documentation requirements vary by your home country's implementing organization.

Yes. Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, and Pharmacy are available as 6-year One-Tier Master (OTM) programs. HEC allocates 20 seats for Medicine, 10 for Dentistry from the 400-student nomination quota. These seats are highly competitive.
HEC nominates 400 students annually for the main list: 200 Bachelor's (including 20 Medicine, 10 Dentistry, 40 other fields), 100 Master's, 30 PhD, and 70 OTM. There is also a waiting list. Each participating country has its own national quota - the 400-seat figure is Pakistan's bilateral allocation.
A degree from a Hungarian university is an EU-recognized degree. Graduates can apply for post-study work visas across EU/EEA countries. For Medicine specifically, you would need to go through local medical licensing procedures in whichever EU country you wish to practice.
HEC distributes nominations as: Punjab 50%, KPK 11.5%, Sindh-Rural 11.4%, Sindh-Urban 7.6%, Balochistan 6%, FATA/GB 4%, AJK 2%, Merit 7.5%. Students from smaller provinces can have better nomination odds per capita.
IELTS or other language test requirements depend on the specific university and program you apply to. Many Hungarian universities offer English-medium programs that require IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. Some programs accept a high school or university education-in-English certificate. Always check the specific language requirement listed on each program's page on the Stipendium Hungaricum portal. For Hungarian-medium programs, no IELTS is needed but you will study in Hungarian.
After HEC nominates you, your application is forwarded to your chosen Hungarian university. The university then conducts its own evaluation, which often includes an entrance exam or interview. For Medicine and Dentistry, universities like Semmelweis University (Budapest), University of Debrecen, and University of Pecs have their own admissions processes that assess your biology and chemistry knowledge. You should prepare for these university-level tests in parallel with your Stipendium Hungaricum application. Results and conditional acceptances are typically issued between March and June.
Yes. Medicine graduates from recognized Hungarian universities like Semmelweis University and the University of Debrecen can apply for PMDC/PMC registration. They must pass the PMLE (Pakistan Medical Licensing Examination) like all foreign medical graduates returning to Pakistan. Hungarian medical degrees are EU-accredited, which also opens pathways to practice in European countries after completing local licensing requirements.
Yes. Students who are awaiting their final FSC or degree results can apply by the January 15 deadline. However, you must submit your final official degree/certificate by August 1, 2026. If you do not submit by this date, you may be disqualified from the scholarship even after selection. Ensure your institution issues results and attestations in time.
