About the UNESCO Internship Program (France) 2026

๐Ÿ• 4 min read

The UNESCO Internship Program offers enrolled graduate students a structured opportunity to work within UNESCO's Headquarters in Paris, one of the world's most significant international organizations. Interns are placed across UNESCO's principal sectors: Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information, and Law. The experience gives participants a direct view into how multilateral policy, program development, and global advocacy operate at the highest international level.

2

A critical point that every applicant must understand before applying: UNESCO internships are unpaid. There is no stipend, no allowance, and no remuneration of any kind. Students are fully responsible for their own travel to Paris, their own French visa, their own accommodation in one of the world's most expensive capital cities, and comprehensive health insurance valid in France throughout the internship. This financial burden means the program is realistically only accessible to students who have personal savings, university grants, family support, or a parallel funding source. It is an opportunity for professional experience and international exposure - not a scholarship.

3

Internships run for a minimum of one month and a maximum of six months. Applications are submitted through a rolling online portal at internship.unesco.org - your submission remains active for six months from the date of application, during which time relevant UNESCO units may contact you for available positions. There is no single annual deadline. Only currently enrolled graduate students - those registered in a Master's degree, PhD, or equivalent second degree or higher - are eligible. Candidates who have completed only a Bachelor's degree and have not yet enrolled in a postgraduate program are not eligible to apply.

4

Despite being unpaid, the UNESCO internship is genuinely valuable as a career and networking credential for students with ambitions in international development, policy, diplomacy, cultural preservation, or multilateral affairs. Alumni of the program have gone on to roles at UNESCO itself, other UN agencies, NGOs, and government ministries. The Paris location and the UNESCO network of contacts are long-term professional assets. The program is best approached as a complement to funded academic programs, not as a standalone funding opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

5 questions - click any to expand

A

No. UNESCO internships are completely unpaid. There is no stipend or remuneration. Students must also arrange and fund their own travel, visa, and health insurance.

A

Not if you are not currently enrolled in a graduate programme. Only students currently enrolled in a Master's, PhD, or equivalent second university degree programme are eligible. Completing a Bachelor's degree and not yet starting a graduate programme makes you ineligible.

A

Your application remains active in the UNESCO portal for 6 months from submission. If selected, UNESCO will contact you directly. Meeting all eligibility requirements does not guarantee placement.

A

International students typically need a French short-stay visa or an internship visa (depending on their home country and internship duration) to work at UNESCO in Paris. The entire process - visa application, travel, accommodation, and comprehensive health insurance valid in France - is the student's own responsibility and expense. UNESCO does not provide a formal invitation letter until after selection. Budget carefully: Paris is one of Europe's most expensive capital cities, and your internship duration (1-6 months) determines your total cost commitment.

A

The UNESCO internship is highly competitive. To strengthen your application: choose a sector that directly matches your graduate studies (e.g., Education if you study education policy, Natural Sciences if you are a science PhD student). Your motivation letter (up to 5,000 characters) should make a specific, compelling case for why your academic work is relevant to UNESCO's work in that exact sector. Generic applications that don't tie to a specific sector are much less likely to be selected.
