About the Chevening Scholarship

๐Ÿ• 6 min read

The Chevening Scholarship is the flagship international scholarship program of the UK Government, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and administered by the Chevening Secretariat. Since its founding in 1983, Chevening has funded more than 50,000 scholars from over 160 countries - many of whom have gone on to become heads of state, cabinet ministers, Nobel laureates, Supreme Court justices, leading scientists, and CEOs of global organizations. Receiving a Chevening award is one of the most significant career accelerators available to any professional anywhere in the world.

2

What sets Chevening apart from almost every other scholarship is its emphasis on leadership potential and professional experience over academic grades alone. Applicants must demonstrate at least two years of paid or voluntary work experience (equivalent to 2,800 hours) before the application deadline. This makes Chevening uniquely suited for early-career professionals, policy advocates, researchers, journalists, engineers, and public servants who want to add a world-class UK Master's qualification to an already active career trajectory - not just for recent graduates seeking academic continuation.

3

The financial package is among the most comprehensive of any government scholarship globally. Chevening covers 100% of tuition fees at whichever eligible UK university the scholar chooses, pays a monthly living allowance calibrated to UK living costs (location-adjusted), reimburses the full UK visa application fee, provides economy-class return airfare between the scholar's home country and the UK, and pays an arrival and settlement allowance. Scholars attending mandatory UK-based Chevening events also receive an additional travel grant. There are no hidden costs or co-payments.

4

The application requires four distinct essays - on leadership, networking, studying in the UK, and career plans - alongside two professional or academic reference letters. Applications are submitted online between August and October each year. Shortlisted candidates attend a panel interview conducted in their home country (or online) between February and April. Final selections are announced in June. Scholars must obtain at least one unconditional offer from a UK university by July 9 to confirm their award.

5

Chevening covers one-year Master's programs only, and your choice of program and university is entirely your own - from Oxford and Cambridge to specialist institutions. Because the scholarship is country-administered (each country has a quota of awards), the selection process reflects both individual merit and the UK Government's strategic priorities for each country. Applicants should research their country's Chevening page for specific eligibility notes, as some countries have additional requirements or restrictions.

6

The alumni network is one of Chevening's most enduring benefits. Chevening scholars return home with a global peer group spanning 160+ countries - colleagues and collaborators who hold positions of influence across government, academia, business, and civil society. Alumni chapters and reunion programs maintain these connections actively for decades after the scholarship year ends.

Insider Tips & Pro Tips

TIP 1

Your four essays are the heart of the Chevening application - each should tell a concrete, personal story backed by specific examples, not general statements of intent

TIP 2

The work experience requirement is fixed at 2 years / 2,800 hours - part-time work, voluntary work, and internships all count toward this total

TIP 3

Apply to three distinct programs and universities to maximize your chances of receiving at least one unconditional offer before the July deadline

TIP 4

Connect with Chevening alumni in your country through the official alumni network - many are willing to review essays and share their interview experience

TIP 5

Begin IELTS preparation early: most UK universities require IELTS 6.5 or above, and some competitive programs require 7.0 or 7.5

TIP 6

Your application is evaluated on four dimensions - leadership, networking, UK study rationale, and career plan - not primarily on your academic grades

TIP 7

Apply to UK universities immediately when their portals open (typically September-October) so you have unconditional offers confirmed well before the non-negotiable July 9 deadline

Frequently Asked Questions

7 questions - click any to expand

A

No. You must have at least 2 years (2,800 hours) of work experience - paid or voluntary. Fresh graduates who have not yet worked cannot apply.

A

Almost all UK universities are eligible. You can study at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL, or any other recognized UK institution offering a one-year Master's program.

A

The Chevening application itself does not require IELTS, but UK universities do. Most require IELTS 6.5 or above. You need an unconditional offer from a UK university by July, which typically requires IELTS.

A

Chevening is highly competitive - thousands of candidates from over 160 countries apply each year for a limited number of awards. Selection focuses heavily on leadership potential, quality of work experience, the strength and specificity of the four essays, and interview performance. Academic grades matter, but they are not the primary differentiator. Candidates who can articulate a clear and compelling career plan - and show that a specific UK Master's is central to that plan - consistently outperform stronger academic candidates who give vague or generic motivations.

A

Chevening requires four essays: (1) Leadership - describe a specific situation where you demonstrated leadership; (2) Networking - explain how you have built networks and used relationships to achieve goals; (3) Studying in the UK - explain why a UK education is specifically important for your career goals; (4) Career Plan - describe your plans post-scholarship and how Chevening will help you achieve them. Each essay must be specific, personal, and backed by real examples. Vague statements about 'wanting to help Pakistan' without concrete evidence are weak.

A

You should apply to your three chosen UK universities as soon as their application portals open - typically September or October, right as you are also submitting your Chevening application. This ensures you receive unconditional offer letters well before the July 9 deadline. Do not wait until after hearing about your Chevening application status - that is too late to meet the offer deadline.

A

The Chevening interview is typically a 30-45 minute panel interview conducted in person or online. Interviewers ask about your leadership experiences, your career plan, why you chose your program, and why you want to study in the UK. They probe for specific examples, consistency with your essays, and evidence of networking ability. Prepare by reviewing all four of your essays, having 5-6 concrete professional stories ready, and being able to explain clearly how your Chevening program connects to your career goals.
