About the Global Korea Scholarship
The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), formerly known as the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP), is administered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under South Korea's Ministry of Education. It is one of the most rigorously competitive and generously funded government scholarship programs in the world, attracting thousands of applications annually from across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The program's goal is to attract the world's most talented international scholars to South Korean universities, building long-term people-to-people relationships between Korea and partner nations.
What distinguishes GKS from most other scholarships is the comprehensiveness of its package. Recipients receive full tuition coverage, a round-trip international airfare, a monthly living allowance (KRW 1,000,000 for Master's and KRW 1,500,000 for PhD students, approximately USD 750-1,100/month), comprehensive health insurance, a settlement allowance paid upon arrival, a thesis or dissertation printing fee reimbursement, and a completion grant paid upon graduation. Most uniquely, the scholarship also fully funds a one-year Korean language training program before the degree begins - a benefit not found in most comparable scholarships.
GKS operates through two parallel tracks. The Embassy Track involves applying through the Korean Embassy or consulate in the applicant's home country, which allows students to list up to three Korean universities in preference order. The University Track involves applying directly to a selected Korean university's international admissions office, limited to one university. Both tracks feed into NIIED's final Phase 2 evaluation, which reviews all nominees for final selection. Crucially, applicants may only apply through one track - submitting through both results in automatic disqualification of all applications.
The scholarship is available at the Master's and PhD levels across virtually all academic fields at over 60 designated Korean universities. Korea's leading research institutions are among the most technically advanced in the world: Seoul National University (SNU), KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology), Yonsei University, and Korea University consistently rank among Asia's and the world's top institutions in engineering, computer science, natural sciences, and medicine. GKS alumni have access to Korea's world-leading technology and research industry upon graduation.
The timeline for GKS is structured over two years. Selected students begin the one-year Korean language course in March following their selection, then start their degree program in March of the following year. The scholarship is fully active throughout the language year - accommodation, stipend, and insurance all continue. By the time degree studies begin, students arrive on campus with Korean language proficiency and a full year of cultural integration already completed, giving them a strong head start on academic and social life.

Insider Tips & Pro Tips
Write your Personal Statement entirely yourself - NIIED explicitly screens for AI-generated and plagiarized content, and detection results in immediate disqualification. Your authentic story, written in your own voice, is what reviewers are looking for.
Your Study Plan must be specific and research-focused. Name actual Korean professors whose work interests you, reference the specific lab or research center you wish to join, and explain clearly what academic contribution you aim to make. Generic study plans are among the most common rejection reasons.
Recommendation letters must be from university professors or research supervisors who can evaluate your academic ability - letters from employers, family, or non-academic contacts are rejected. A detailed, specific letter from a professor who supervised your thesis is far more valuable than a brief letter from a famous professor who barely knows you.
Start your document attestation process at least 2-3 months before the Embassy Track deadline. Your academic documents must be attested by your country's higher education authority and ministry of foreign affairs - this process takes 4-8 weeks in many countries and cannot be rushed.
Even without TOPIK or IELTS scores, submit strong supporting evidence of language ability - English-medium transcripts, work or research done in English or Korean, or any language certifications you hold. Competitors with language scores have an advantage.
Research the universities that have historically placed students from your country - this helps you write a more convincing and realistic study plan and select universities where your profile is competitive.

No. Applying to both tracks simultaneously results in automatic disqualification of all your applications. You must choose ONLY ONE track before the application deadline.
IELTS/TOEFL and TOPIK are not mandatory but are strongly recommended. Even a moderate score significantly strengthens your application. You can apply without language certificates, but competing candidates with scores have an advantage.
The one-year Korean language course is provided to all GKS scholars before the degree program begins. It prepares you for academic and daily life in Korea. This year is fully funded - tuition, accommodation, and stipend all continue during the language year.
GKS provides KRW 1,000,000/month for Master's students (~USD 750) and KRW 1,500,000/month for PhD students (~USD 1,100). These amounts are generally sufficient to cover accommodation, food, and transport in Korean university cities. Many students manage to save each month, especially in smaller university cities outside Seoul.
Your Study Plan for GKS should be specific and well-structured. It must clearly explain: what you plan to research or study, why Korea specifically (mention specific faculty, labs, or university programs), what academic foundation you bring to this field, and how the degree will contribute to your home country's development and your own professional goals on your return. Vague, generic plans are one of the most common reasons GKS applications fail. Link your plan to actual Korean universities' research strengths and, if possible, reference specific professors whose work aligns with yours.
For GKS, your academic documents must be attested by HEC (Higher Education Commission) and MOFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). First, get your degrees and transcripts verified and attested by HEC at hec.gov.pk. Then, take the HEC-attested documents to MOFA for apostille-style attestation. The process takes 4-8 weeks total, and must be completed before the Embassy Track deadline in mid-September. Do not leave this for the last minute.
TOPIK is not mandatory for GKS, but submitting a TOPIK score significantly strengthens your application, especially if you are applying for a Korean-language program. TOPIK Level 3 or above is generally considered competitive. Even for English-taught programs, TOPIK Level 1-2 demonstrates genuine interest in Korea and commitment to integrating into the academic environment. You will receive intensive Korean language training during the funded one-year preparatory course regardless of your starting level.
GKS scholars can work part-time with the university's permission, subject to the conditions set by their institution and Korean immigration law. However, since the GKS allowance is designed to cover all living costs, most scholars do not need to work. Working part-time is optional and must not interfere with academic performance, which affects scholarship continuation.
