About the UST Korea Scholarship

๐Ÿ• 5 min read

The University of Science and Technology (UST) is one of South Korea's most distinctive and research-intensive graduate institutions - not a traditional single-campus university, but a consortium of 30 government-funded national research institutes. These include some of the most respected research bodies in Asia: the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), and many others. Students at UST conduct their graduate research directly within these national laboratories, working alongside Korea's leading scientists, engineers, and researchers.

2

For international students, UST offers a fully funded scholarship that covers 100% of tuition fees, a generous monthly stipend, comprehensive health insurance, and general welfare support. The PhD stipend stands at KRW 2,500,000 per month (approximately USD 1,900), making it one of the highest monthly research scholarships available in Asia. Master's students receive KRW 1,600,000 per month (approximately USD 1,200). These amounts position UST significantly above most comparable funded research programs in China, Southeast Asia, or Central Asia, and allow students to live very comfortably in South Korea.

3

UST programs span virtually all STEM and research-intensive fields: Engineering, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Environmental Science, Energy Research, Bioscience and Biotechnology, Information and Communications Technology, and more. All programs are research-based - there are no coursework-only options. Each student must identify a target institute and a specific supervising professor whose research aligns with their academic background. This means that the quality of your research fit and your ability to make early contact with prospective supervisors is one of the most important factors in a successful UST application.

4

The application window is narrow, opening in late September and closing in mid-October each year. Applicants submit their materials through the official UST portal at admission.ust.ac.kr, along with a non-refundable fee of approximately USD 30 (KRW 35,000). All documents must be in English or Korean - any documents in other languages must be accompanied by official notarized translations. After the application deadline, the process moves through a document screening phase in November, followed by an online or in-person interview with faculty at the target institute.

5

South Korea's research infrastructure makes UST degrees highly credible internationally. KIST-affiliated researchers publish in top-tier journals globally, and an advanced degree earned through the UST system opens doors to postdoctoral positions, industry roles, and further academic careers worldwide. South Korea is also one of the most technologically advanced economies in the world, meaning that students gain practical exposure to cutting-edge laboratory environments that directly support high-impact research output. For students whose long-term goal is research excellence in STEM, UST is among the most powerful scholarship pathways available globally.

Insider Tips & Pro Tips

TIP 1

Degree attestation requirements vary by country - check your country's apostille or legalization process early, as this can take 4-8 weeks; all documents must be in English or Korean with official notarized translations for any other language

TIP 2

Contact UST institute professors by email in July-August, well before applications open - include your CV and a brief research interest statement

TIP 3

All documents not in English or Korean must have notarized official translations - factor this into your preparation timeline

TIP 4

The application fee (~USD 30) is non-refundable - only submit a fully complete application

TIP 5

Choose your target institute based on research fit, not just name - UST is strongest for life sciences, energy, materials, and engineering

TIP 6

Your personal statement and study plan are carefully evaluated - be specific about what research you want to do and why UST/your target institute is the right place

Frequently Asked Questions

6 questions - click any to expand

A

UST is a consortium of 30 South Korean government research institutes, not a single-campus university. Students conduct their research at national laboratories (KIST, KRIBB, KIER, etc.) rather than a traditional university setting. This makes it especially strong for hands-on research training.

A

Yes. All degree certificates and transcripts must be apostilled or notarized. The specific attestation chain depends on your country - check whether your country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention and what notarization process applies. Start this process at least 6-8 weeks before the October deadline to avoid rushing.

A

Master's students receive KRW 1,600,000/month (approximately USD 1,200). PhD students receive KRW 2,500,000/month (approximately USD 1,900). This is one of the highest stipends for international research students in Asia - well above most comparable scholarships in China, Southeast Asia, or Central Asia.

A

Yes. Approximately USD 30 (KRW 35,000). This fee is non-refundable, so ensure your application is complete and competitive before submitting.

A

UST's 30 member institutes include: KIST (Korea Institute of Science & Technology - materials, robotics, energy), KRIBB (bioscience and biotechnology), KIER (energy research), ETRI (electronics and telecommunications), KIST Europe, KIMM (machinery and manufacturing), KIGAM (geoscience and mineral resources), KIRAM (radiation medicine), and many more. Choose based on research fit - visit the institute's website, read about active projects, and identify a professor whose current work aligns with your background. The UST portal lists all institutes with their research focus areas. Quality of supervisor match matters more than institute prestige.

A

UST and GKS are complementary but different. GKS covers a wider range of universities and fields, while UST is research-institute focused and more specialized. UST's PhD stipend (KRW 2,500,000/month) is higher than GKS's PhD allowance. UST programs are exclusively research-based with no coursework-only options, making it better suited for students with clear research goals. GKS may be better for students who want broader university exposure, Korean language study, or programs not related to natural sciences and engineering. If your goal is cutting-edge STEM research in Korea, UST is the stronger pathway.
