About the KAUST Graduate Scholarship
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is one of the world's most exceptional graduate research universities - purpose-built in 2009 by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as an internationally oriented institution dedicated entirely to STEM research and graduate education. Ranked in the top 100 globally by QS, KAUST focuses on solving humanity's greatest challenges: food security, sustainable energy, water scarcity, health, environmental preservation, and digital transformation. The campus is home to over 100 nationalities of students, faculty, and researchers - operating entirely in English with no requirement for Arabic knowledge.
The KAUST graduate scholarship is among the most financially generous research scholarships in the world. It covers 100% of tuition fees, provides an annual living allowance of USD 20,000 to 30,000 (depending on degree level and academic progression), free on-campus housing, comprehensive medical and dental coverage for students and their families, and relocation support to Saudi Arabia. For PhD students who progress well, the living allowance increases over time. The result is that KAUST graduate students can live, research, and thrive with essentially zero personal financial burden.
The scholarship is open to all non-Saudi citizens from any country for Master's and PhD programs across KAUST's full range of STEM disciplines. English proficiency (TOEFL iBT 81 or IELTS 6.5 minimum) is required. Applications are submitted in two rounds annually, with the earlier round (October deadline) recommended. Three letters of recommendation from professors or research advisors are mandatory - these must be from academics in your field, not general character references. All academic documents must be officially attested before submission.
KAUST's research impact is disproportionately large for its size. It ranks among the world's top institutions for citations per paper and research output per faculty - producing breakthrough research in machine learning, solar energy, marine ecology, computational biology, and materials science, among others. The university's small, elite cohort model means students benefit from exceptional faculty-to-student ratios, direct supervisor access, and cutting-edge laboratory infrastructure. Graduate alumni of KAUST go on to postdoctoral positions and faculty roles at leading global universities, and to research and leadership positions in industry and government worldwide.

Yes. The scholarship is open to all non-Saudi citizens worldwide. TOEFL iBT 81 or IELTS 6.5 is the minimum English proficiency requirement for admission.
KAUST evaluates research potential above all else - grades matter, but research experience is the differentiator. A strong application includes: a focused research statement that references specific KAUST faculty and their work, evidence of prior research experience (thesis, lab work, publications or preprints, conference presentations), and three recommendation letters from professors who have directly supervised your research. Avoid generic statements - KAUST admissions committees read thousands of applications and immediately notice candidates who have actually read the faculty's papers.
KAUST's annual living allowance of $20,000-$30,000 (approximately $1,667-$2,500 per month) is among the highest of any graduate scholarship in the world. By comparison, most European scholarships provide EUR 700-1,200/month. The higher end ($30,000/year) typically applies to PhD students at advanced stages. Combined with free housing and full medical coverage, KAUST scholars have essentially zero personal expenses while conducting world-class research.
