About the KAUST Visiting Student Research Program
The KAUST Visiting Student Research Program (VSRP) is a fully funded short-term research internship at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology - one of the world's top-ranked graduate research universities. KAUST is a unique institution: a graduate-only, English-speaking, international research campus located on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia, home to over 100 nationalities of researchers, scientists, and faculty. The VSRP program places international students directly inside this world-class research environment for 2-6 months.
Unlike many internships that assign students to administrative or supporting roles, VSRP is a genuine hands-on research placement. Interns are embedded in a specific research lab, working under a KAUST faculty supervisor on an active ongoing project. They are expected to contribute meaningfully to the research - and many VSRP alumni have co-authored or contributed to publications from their internship work. The difference between VSRP and a conventional internship is significant: this is a direct research apprenticeship at a top-100 global university.
The financial package is comprehensive and requires no personal funding. VSRP provides a monthly stipend of approximately USD 1,000, a private bedroom and bathroom on KAUST's secure campus, round-trip international flight tickets, visa support, and full access to KAUST's world-class laboratory infrastructure, equipment, and campus facilities. The campus is self-contained with restaurants, sports facilities, and beaches - making the experience comfortable and immersive.
Eligibility is open to 3rd or 4th year Bachelor's students and Master's students with STEM backgrounds from any country. A strong GPA (typically 3.5 out of 4.0 or equivalent) is expected. Applications are project-specific - VSRP does not have a general application that assigns you to a lab. Instead, applicants browse available research projects on the KAUST VSRP portal and apply directly to specific projects matching their skills and research interests. New projects are posted on a rolling basis throughout the year, so regular monitoring of the portal is important.
A powerful aspect of VSRP is its role as a direct pathway to KAUST's full graduate scholarship programs. VSRP alumni who perform well in their internship are frequently encouraged to apply for KAUST's fully funded Master's or PhD programs, and many go on to do so - with the significant advantage of a faculty sponsor who already knows their work. For STEM students with graduate school ambitions, VSRP can function as a 2-6 month proof-of-concept for a full scholarship offer.

Insider Tips & Pro Tips
Projects are lab-specific and posted individually - browse the portal regularly as new projects appear throughout the year.
Tailor your statement of purpose to the exact research project - generic statements are the most common reason for rejection.
If you don't have IELTS/TOEFL, KAUST can provide a Duolingo test token - mention this in your cover note.
A strong recommendation from a research supervisor (not just a course teacher) carries significantly more weight.
VSRP experience is widely regarded as a bridge to KAUST's full graduate programs - treat it as a long-term investment.

VSRP is a research internship, not a degree scholarship. It is a 2-6 month placement in a KAUST research lab. However, it is fully funded (stipend + housing + flights) and is widely used as a pathway to KAUST's full Master's or PhD graduate programs.
A strong GPA is expected - typically 3.5 out of 4.0 or equivalent. The exact threshold may vary by lab and project.
A minimum B2 level English proficiency is required. IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE scores are accepted. If you do not have a score, KAUST can provide a Duolingo test token upon application.
Your statement of purpose for VSRP must be project-specific - this is the most important thing. Read the research project description carefully and explain: what specific skills you bring that are relevant to the project, what you have done before that is similar (courses, lab work, thesis chapters, personal projects), and what you hope to contribute and learn. Generic statements that could apply to any project almost always get rejected. One focused, targeted page beats three generic pages.
VSRP does not automatically convert to a graduate admission, but it creates a very strong pathway. VSRP alumni who perform well are often encouraged to apply to KAUST's full Master's or PhD programs and carry significant advantage in the selection process because faculty already know their work. Many KAUST graduate students first came through VSRP. Think of it as a 2-6 month audition for a full graduate scholarship.
